This year Gully boy has been officially chosen as India’s entry to Oscars by the Film Federation of India. Well, this entry can be quite debatable if we look at other films released in the same language. Sadly, India has never got the Golden statuette despite being the biggest producer of films around the world. First film nominated for the category of best foreign language was Mother India(1958) followed by Salaam Bombay(1989) and Lagaan (2001).

Gully boy stars Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in leading roles while Kalki Kochlin was leading supporting actress in the film. The plot revolves around a man who lives in Dharavi slum of Mumbai. He is interested in rapping but is struggling due to his personal family matters as well as troubling relationship with his girlfriend. After joining a rap game he realises his potential of rapping. The movie seems very similar to Hollywood film ‘’8 mile’’ which was based on the early life struggles of famous rapper Eminem. The movie won the  Best Original Song at Oscars for the song lose yourself.

Out of total 28 movies Gullyboy was selected after jury’s decision. The other Hindi movies which were in the fray include Badhaai Ho, Andhadhun, Article 15, Uri: The Surgical Strike, Badla, Kesari, The Tashkent Files and some others. The films were screened for the jury at Bijoli Cinema, a heritage single plex cinema hall, here. The screenings began September 16 onwards, the FFI said in a release. “The energy of the film (Gully Boy) was infectious and it will speak to the audience,” Aparna Sen, Chairperson, Jury Committee, said.

If Gullyboy wins the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film then it would become first Indian ever Indian movie to do so. Watch the trailer of the film below.
